4+1 unusual tips on where to go in summer from Ostružná
Enter “Ostružná” into your GPS, or if you already have a train ticket, just hop on board and go. What should you do if you are visiting the Jeseníky Mountains for the first time? Which trips are best suited to Ostružná as a starting point? Here are five selected routes that will help you discover the authentic Jeseníky region as it really is.
Ostružná is a great starting point for trips
Ostružná is the perfect starting point for attractive trips throughout the Jeseníky region. Trips in the Jeseníky Mountains often lead to Ostružná. And this is also true outside the busy winter ski season – because even during the summer, the surroundings of this small village, founded in 1561, have a lot to offer.
Beautiful, popular, but not crowded mountains
The Jeseníky region (known as the Eastern Sudetenland) is a region with many trump cards: beautiful mountains, fascinating history and unspoilt nature. Although it also has a wide range of recreational and sporting destinations, in summer in the Jeseníky Mountains, outside the most frequented routes and places (typically Mount Praděd), you will not encounter crowds of tourists as in other areas of the Czech Republic.
Choose according to distance and your fitness level
We have also selected several routes for trips from the village of Ostružná, according to difficulty, length and elevation. What they all have in common is the opportunity to experience the Jeseníky Mountains in their purest form and within a short distance of the Theresian Apartment hotel. Whichever route you choose for your trips, the Theresian Apartment in Ostružná offers comfort both indoors and outdoors upon your return. You can combine walking, train and car transport. After your return, you can relax perfectly in the apartments. You can use the indoor wellness centre or the outdoor kitchen with a fireplace.
#1 Pasák – Vozka
Start just a short distance from Branná. It’s a 5-minute drive from Ostružná. A group of rocks almost 10 metres high in the shape of an anvil called Pasák, not far from Branná, forms a cluster of bizarre shapes. It is one of the most famous and resembles a human figure (according to legend, it is a petrified shepherd). From Pasák, a 10 km walk awaits you. You can manage it at a leisurely pace in 3.5 hours. The route is therefore suitable for a day trip, if you plan to take the same route back. The romantic Pasák-Vozka hiking trail is located just a short distance from Ostružná. At the end of the section, you will find Vozka. It is one of the iconic rocks of the Jeseníky Mountains. One of the oldest hunting lodges in the Jeseníky Mountains stood below Vozka as early as 1739. Today it is known as Furmanka. You will find it in the same place (at an altitude of 1,257 metres above sea level) and you will immediately be captivated by its unique atmosphere. Prepare brunch in the morning, set off and enjoy every bite at the end of the route. Here you will understand what the Jeseníky Mountains are all about.
#2 Dobrá Voda – Šerák
Less than a kilometre away from the Theresian Apartment Hotel, in the forest, stands the Svatá Voda chapel with the Dobrá voda spring. You will find it right next to the red trail from Ramzová to Čerňava (about 200 metres to the left behind the cable car). However, you cannot get there directly and quickly from the apartment. The navigation system will first guide you along a 5 km introductory route (allow 2 hours for this, as you are in the mountains). You will then find the spring on the busy red tourist trail to Šerák. The spring is clearly visible from the trail and you cannot miss it. Use it as a place to relax before the ascent. Be sure to take some water from the spring with you – but if you find the spring dry, know that the current state reflects the variability of the Jeseníky landscape, where water disappears and reappears throughout the year. Mountain water is very tasty, and you will need it on your journey. The route is short (4.3 km, which you can cover in less than 2 hours), but with an elevation gain of almost 1,000 metres. Šerák Mountain is a popular destination for trips and hikes in the Jeseníky Mountains, but you have to earn your beer at the top. Šerák is a high mountain on the historical border between Moravia and Silesia. Together with neighbouring Keprník, it is part of the Šerák-Keprník National Nature Reserve. It lies on the main European watershed between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. You can take great photos of the Jeseníky Mountains and neighbouring Rychleb from the very top. The Jiří Chalet is located there and offers classic Czech cuisine. You can pay by card or QR code – for example, for a Holba Šerák 11° or Holba Keprník 12° beer from nearby Hanušovice. Don’t feel like walking? You can’t get to Šerák by car. It’s better to take the chairlift, which operates all year round. Its lower station is a 700 m walk from the Ramzová train stop (which you can reach by car from Theresian Apartment in 2 minutes).
#3 Lipová – Forest Bar – Smrk
Want to combine a train ride with a hike through the mountains? There is a train station a two-minute walk from Theresian Apartment. Buy a one-way ticket to Lipová-lázně station. If you want to use the train for trips from the village of Ostružná, this is the right route. Trains run every hour and will take you to the start of a 20-kilometre hike for the more demanding. You can do it in 6.5 hours – but it depends on how long you stay at the Forest Bar. In the self-service bar, you pay yourself into the cash box for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, hot drinks, mackerel and smoked meats from the fire in summer, and themed postcards. Cold water from the stream in the wooden tank is completely free for refreshment. The Forest Bar is only 2 km from Smrk Mountain and provides great refreshment on the way from Ostružná. From the Forest Bar, it is only 2 kilometres to Smrk Mountain (1,127 m above sea level). The mountain peak gets its name from the fact that it is covered with spruce trees and typical peat bog vegetation. Near the summit is the historic tripoint of Moravia, Silesia and Poland. From Smrk, you can descend along well-marked hiking trails and be back at your apartment in Ostružná in about two hours. You can then enjoy another two hours of wellness, a whirlpool and sauna for 350 CZK per person.
#4 Ostružná – fortifications – Old Town
The fourth route leads from the village of Ostružná to Staré Město. It is interesting for two groups of people: lovers of panoramic views and military history enthusiasts. Although the route does not follow the ridge, it still offers many beautiful views. Nature is rich and varied in this part of the Jeseníky Mountains. Even a layman will not overlook the dozens of military bunkers and pillboxes of the former Czechoslovak border fortifications from 1935–1938. From the village of Ostružná, there are also interesting trips to Staré Město, where you can learn about a piece of military history. They have remained as they were at the time of the Munich Agreement. During the war, they were damaged by the Wehrmacht (which used explosives to remove the high-quality steel-cast embrasures and used them for the famous Atlantic Wall built in Normandy). If you want to have a few beers along the way, go ahead. There is a train from Staré Město to Ostružná every hour, and you will be able to return in the evening. You can make one transfer in Hanušovice, where the Holba brewery is located. If you can get a group of 10 people together, arrange an excursion (or at least visit the brewery museum). In an hour, you will be back in Ostružná from Hanušovice. It is exactly 516 steps from the train station to the gate of Theresian Apartment.
#5 Kladské sedlo – Adélin pramen – Králický Sněžník
You will need a car for this route. We chose Kladské sedlo as the starting point, which is 25 km from Theresian Apartment in Ostružná. But we did not choose it by chance. From here, you will set off for Králický Sněžník, the third highest mountain in the Czech Republic (1,423 m above sea level). The mountain does not bear its name for nothing – snow stays here for up to 8 months a year. If you are planning to visit the Jeseníky Mountains in summer, be sure to climb Sněžník and don’t be afraid of the ascent. Králický Sněžník is one of the most attractive destinations for trips from Ostružná and is well worth the effort. The eight and a half kilometres can be covered in less than four hours, and with the return trip, it is a great tip for a day trip. Two-thirds of the way along the route, you will come across Adélin’s spring. It rises in a shelter next to the tourist trail and flows with delicious mountain water. On the southern slope of Králický Sněžník, 300 metres from the summit, the Morava River rises. On the Polish side of Králický Sněžník stands a 33-metre-high observation tower. It has a covered viewing platform with a vestibule and offers views not only of the Jeseníky, Rychlebské and Orlické Mountains, but also of the Krkonoše and Beskydy Mountains. All-in-one.
